Frequently asked questions

Yes. Text is converted to UTF-8 bytes before encoding and decoded back as UTF-8, so accents, emoji and scripts like Arabic or Chinese round-trip correctly.

A variant that replaces + with - and / with _, and usually omits the trailing = padding, so the result can sit in URLs, filenames and JWTs without escaping. The decoder accepts both variants automatically.

If the bytes aren't valid UTF-8 — an image or a ZIP, for example — the tool says so and lets you download the decoded bytes as a file instead of showing garbled characters.

No. Base64 is an encoding that anyone can reverse instantly. It's for safely moving binary data through text-only channels, not for hiding secrets.

No. Files are read and encoded locally by your browser. Very large files make very large Base64 strings (about 33% bigger), so files up to 25 MB are accepted.
